One of SEKTDA's goals is to establish a National Heritage Area. National Heritage Areas seek to preserve and celebrate many of America's defining landscapes. National Heritage Areas conserve the natural resources of a region and develop them in a way that improves the quality of life for local residents and stimulates economic development for the region.

SEKTDA is partnering with the Kentucky Heritage Artisan Trails (KHAT) to develop a Heritage Area based on artisans in this area.  The partnership has just begun and the developing stages of the process are in full swing.  SEKTDA hopes to have legislation introduced in 2006 for the National Heritage Area Designation.
